In a quest to find some shim washers
to adjust the installed height of the valves, i phoned a local engine shop, they had no such things and referred me to somewhere that might, a top secret location out in the middle of nowhere on the flanks of the hills outside lancaster.... but literally 10 mins ride from my house.
This morning i rode out there and jeez, what a place! Theres no company name, no sign, and no clue whatsoever what lurks in the buildings behind this guys house. The only way i knew i was at the right place was when i walked into a garage and on the floor beneath the full size snooker table were the rollers of a rolling road!
Turns out the place is a fully kitted engine shop, they have computerized soundproof engine test cells, lathes, mills, you name it. And engines galore, ranging from tractors to F1 lumps.
And most importantly they had shims!! not the right size i might add, but i got some and trimmed them down with some scissors, they cut easily because they are so thin.
Armed with the parts i needed i put all the valves back in, sprayed up the copper head gasket with permatex, and after letting it tack-up for a couple of hours i refitted the head, torqued it down and bolted in the cams. And hey presto it looks like a humongous engine again.
