The last two weeks were supposed to to have seen the engine come back together ready for a test fire-up this weekend. But instead the engine is now further apart than ever and it got worse today when i had to remove the engine from the frame altogether.
It started last weekend when i did a dry build and found out the pistons pockets weren't going to be big enough for the bigger valves this new head uses. A quick word with Roger Upperton, and he offered to sort them out for me if i brought the pistons over. So i removed them and took them over for some modification.
With that problem out of the way i went on to damage an oil ring when refitting the pistons. A new one was put in the post and this morning i fitted it, and the barrels successfully.
This afternoon i fitted the cylinder head and noticed one of the head nuts wasn't tightening properly, like it was pulling the thread. I tried some of he other studs and they were ok but suddenly there was a loud 'crack'. Wondering what the heck had happened i removed the head to discover it had a crack in it about 2 inches long that ran up the front of the cam chain tunnel.
I couldn't believe it... after all the work and money that had gone into that head.
I carried on taking it apart and removed the barrels to find the head stud that wouldn't torque down had pulled a timesert partially out of it's hole. I managed to remove the whole insert but now there is a gaping great hole where a head stud should be . At this point i unbolted the engine from the frame, put it on the bench and came home before i broke anything else.
With less than 2 weeks now till the first event it's going to be tough to get it ready. I need a solution for the pulled thread, and may have to refit my old cylinder head. Something i don't really want to do.
To add to the workload, the ACU rulebook came out recently and there have been some changes to the rules. I decided to try and make my bike comply and i fitted a different back brake disc. I collected a redesigned brake carrier from the water cutting place today. With so much engine work to do though i may not have time to finish it.
