The good ... and the slight oversight
I finished the prototype offboard starter, and despite my fears that instead of turning the engine round it would turn me round, it didn't. However i tried it first with no spark plugs in, so no compression and it was fine. But with the plugs in it didn't have the power to turn it over. I kinda expected that as i was only hooked up to one battery.
I was going to try 2 batteries today but before i had chance i realized something kinda major ..... it spins the WRONG WAY!!!
So it's back to the scrap yard for one that goes the right way!
The Bad
Some of the so called performance parts you can buy are far from what you would expect. The GSX1100 or GS1100 is a 27 year old engine so it's fair to say that you would think it's been around long enough to develop the parts to perfection. Nope .... heavy duty cylinder head studs? you buy them as a pack of 12, enough for every stud as you would expect. But in actuality you can only use 6 of them as the other 6 don't have either the o-ring that the middle 2 studs have or they aren't threaded on top like the outer 4 need to be to hold the cam cover on? retailers in this country want to charge you £50 for this. There are no properly made heavy duty alternatives.
The Ugly
This also concerns these performance parts you can waste your money on. This time it's the heavy duty crankcase stud kit, i won't mention any particular brand but basically 2 of the studs should either not be studs or should be made 5mm shorter. But they're not and the result is when you come to fit the oil filter cover it won't go on. Other than splitting the engine again to extract the studs and cut them down you have to remove metal from the cover to allow it to fit.
I just hope it doesn't leak.
The moral of the story is, build yourself a machine shop before you build a bike. That way you can make everything yourself and do it right.
