Some things are just plain tricky, refitting gudgeon pin circlips for instance, for a while i gave up, convinced i'd been sent the wrong ones. Perhaps these were for 20mm GSX's? but i looked at the back of the packet and it says 18mm on it .... drat. Maybe they were heavy duty, they did say weisco on the pack. Either way they are awkward to fit, if there was a tool out there for refitting them i would buy one.
Also pretty tricky is getting all the pistons back into the barrels. I don't have a ring compressor and i've been told they don't make things much easier anyway. The secret is to struggle without going insane. Simple really!
Anyway i remained moderately sane and got the
barrels on. It's all coming together slowly.
After asking a few technical boffins about the clutch hub, it turns out the later GSX's (the EFE models) used a hub with a steel insert in the middle. So i've sourced one of these for £35 and it's on its way. This should be a permanent fix. However i was also told that it's not a major problem to have wear on the hub, and some strong loctite on the splines will fill the gaps and once the nut is tight nothing should move anyway.
The next step is something new to me, i have to set the installed heights of the valves by placing shims underneath the spring seats to bring the
height to 32mm.
I tried to do one but access with vernier calipers is out of the question. So instead i cut a piece of hardened steel bar and ground it to 32.0mm long. Checking it carefully for length after every slight grind. I then used this as my measure and feeler gauges to find the size of the remaining gap. First valve i tried was 0.7 mm over so will need 0.7mm of shimming.
This picture shows the process.
