Firstly, i've gathered a small collection of entertaining pictures, most taken from the Dragbike.com forums. The theme is "wheelybars are for sissy's"
I spent a few hours sorting things out ready for the Dyno on Saturday, my tweaks to the starter motor should mean it has a more robust design now, although i suspect it will try and fail elsewhere.
I was glad to read some of the early stories of the first starter motors for drag racing engines. Apparently they are a fairly recent thing, they used to start them using rollers, and before that they would get towed by a truck to about 35mph (hence the term fire-up road) before letting the clutch out and hoping it started.
Some of the first starters were bigger than the bike engines themselves and would require upto 6 large truck batteries!
I re-torqued all the cylinder head bolts and i'm hoping that will have cured the leaking head gasket.
I realized i need to be more careful now i have nitrous. With the engine off i was showing my nephew how the nitrous worked and running the program on the schnitz box, what i didn't think about was all the nitrous in the pipes would have gone into the engine or intakes and 20 minutes later i nearly blew my engine up whist doing some modifications to the wiring , I'd forgotten to switch the ignition off and the spark plugs must have sparked and there was an almighty bang as it lit the gas in the cylinders. Luckily the intake valves must have been open and the gas came whooshing back through the carbs!
A new sign now adorns the handlebars. It reads "Beware of Nitrous in cylinders!"
I also decided i should get the back wheel balanced in the hope it will make it smoother on the dyno. So i'll get that done tomorrow.
If the runs go ok i'll write out a cheque and get my Easter Thunderball entry form sent off. The cost is more than i was expecting at £175, but that includes electricity and admittance for 4 crew members.
It might be the only event i get to enter anyway as i just found out my job ends at easter too. I doubt the Job Center will sponsor my racing effort somehow!
